The Hook
Ever feel like you're talking but no one is actually hearing you? Or have you zoned out while a friend was telling a story, only to realize you have no idea what they just said? You're not alone. The Story
Arjun’s friend, Jaylen, sat down at lunch looking completely defeated. He started talking about a big argument he had with his parents. Arjun’s first instinct was to jump in with advice, or maybe crack a joke to cheer him up. He almost said, “You should just tell them…” but he stopped himself.
Instead, he just listened. When Jaylen paused, Arjun asked, “Wow, what happened next?” and later, “How did that make you feel?” He didn’t offer a single solution. At the end of the conversation, Jaylen let out a long breath. “Thanks, man,” he said. “That’s the most helpful talk I’ve had all week.” Arjun realized that sometimes the best way to help a friend is to say almost nothing at all.
