The Real Talk
Banks provide services, and sometimes they charge for them. These charges are called fees. Understanding them is the key to not giving away your hard-earned money for nothing. The most common fee you'll run into is the ATM fee. An ATM (Automated Teller Machine) is a machine that lets you take out cash from your account. If you use an ATM owned by your bank, it's usually free. But if you use an ATM from a different bank (called 'out-of-network'), you can get hit with two fees: one from the ATM's owner, and another from your own bank for using a competitor's machine.Other fees to watch for:Monthly Maintenance Fee: A charge just for having the account open.Overdraft Fee: A big penalty if you spend more money than you have in your account. In some countries, people pay billions of dollars a year...

The Story
Diego, 14, was out with his friends and needed cash for pizza. He saw an ATM at a convenience store and pulled out 20. The screen flashed a message about a 3-unit fee, but he was in a hurry and hit 'accept.' He did the same thing twice more over the next month. When he checked his statement, he was shocked. His balance was 15 units lower than he expected. For withdrawing 60 total, he had paid 15 in fees — enough to buy a whole other pizza. He realized those 'small' fees were not small at all when they added up.
