Key Concepts & Vocabulary
In the simple future tense, most verbs use their infinitive form (the “to” form, like “to eat”) as their stem. However, some of the most important verbs are irregular and have a special stem you just have to memorize. The good news is that the endings are always the same!Verb (Infinitive)Future StemExample (with 'je' (I))être (to be) [ET-ruh]ser-Je serai (I will be) [zhuh suh-RAY] content (happy) [kohn-TAHN].avoir (to have) [ah-VWAR]aur-J'aurai (I will have) [zho-RAY] un chien (a dog) [uhn shee-YEN].aller (to go) [ah-LAY]ir-J'irai (I will go) [zhee-RAY] au cinéma (to the movies) [oh see-nay-MAH]. 🍿faire (to do/make) [FAIR]fer-Je ferai (I will make) [zhuh fuh-RAY] un gâteau (a cake) [uhn gah-TOH].voir (to see) [VWAR]verr-Je verrai (I will see) [zhuh veh-RAY] un film (a movie) [uhn FEELM].v...

Grammar Rules & Patterns
1. The Endings Are Always RegularRule: Even for irregular verbs, the simple future endings are always the same. You just add them to the special irregular stem.je (I) [zhuh]: -aitu (you, singular/informal) [too]: -asil/elle/on (he/she/one) [eel/el/ohn]: -anous (we) [noo]: -onsvous (you, plural/formal) [voo]: -ezils/elles (they) [eel/el]: -ont2. The Stem is IrregularRule: The tricky part is memorizing the stem (the base) of the verb, because it doesn't always look like the infinitive. For example, for the verb aller (to go) [ah-LAY], the stem isn't 'aller-', it's 'ir-'.Example: aller (to go) [ah-LAY] + -ai ➔ allerai ➔ irai (I will go) [ee-RAY].
