Grammar Rules & Patterns
Pattern 1: Playing a Musical InstrumentRule: To say you play an instrument, we use the verb jouer (to play) [zhoo-AY] + de [duh] + the instrument. Be careful, the word “de” [duh] changes depending on the instrument! For a feminine instrument (like la guitare (the guitar) [la gee-TAR]), we say: jouer de la guitare (to play the guitar) [zhoo-AY duh la gee-TAR].For a masculine instrument (like le piano (the piano) [luh pee-AH-no]), we say: jouer du piano (to play the piano) [zhoo-AY doo pee-AH-no]. (du [doo] = de [duh] + le [luh])Pattern 2: Playing a SportRule: For sports, it's different! We use jouer (to play) [zhoo-AY] + à [ah] + the sport.Example: Je joue au hockey (I play hockey) [zhuh zhoo oh ock-AY]. (au [oh] = à [ah] + le [luh])It's easy! DE [duh] for music, À [ah] for sports.
