One Letter, One Sound Each letter makes its own special sound. When you see the letter 'P', you know to make the /p/ sound. This helps you read! Listen for the First Sound The first sound in a word is very important. To find out if a word starts with 'S', listen for the 'sss' sound at the very beginning. Q and U are Best Friends The letter 'Q' is almost always followed by 'U'. When you see 'Q', look for its friend 'U' right next to it. They work together to say /kw/.
