Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
Lexicographical OrderThe formal term for alphabetical order. It's the sequence you find in a dictionary, where words are arranged based on the alphabetical sequence of their component letters. In lexicographical order, 'Apple' comes before 'Apply' because, while the first four letters are the same, the fifth letter 'e' comes before 'y'.
Sorting KeyThe specific part of an item used to determine its position in a list. In this lesson, our primary sorting key is the first letter, followed by the second and third letters. When sorting the words 'Branch' and 'Brave', the first letter 'B' is the same. The second letter 'r' is the same. The sorting key becomes the third letter, where 'a&...

Key Rules & Conventions
The Sequential Comparison Rule
Compare words letter by letter, from left to right, up to the third letter. Stop and decide the order as soon as you find a difference.
Use this as your foundational process. Don't jump ahead or guess. If the first letters are the same, move to the second. If the second letters are the same, move to the third. The first point of difference determines the order.
The Three-Letter Tie-Breaker Rule
If the first three letters of two words are identical, the order is determined by the fourth letter. If one word ends at the third letter, it comes before the longer word.
This is the critical extension. The process of comparison doesn't stop if the first three letters match. You must continue to the next letter or recognize that a shorter word...

A student's glossary is ordered: 1. `Rhetoric`, 2. `Rhetor`, 3. `Rhetorical analysis`. The student's logic is that the core word `Rhetor` should follow the main topic `Rhetoric`. Analyze this sequence based on the 'Shorter Word Confusion' rule.
A.The order is correct because `Rhetor` is a sub-concept of `Rhetoric`.
B.The order is incorrect; the shorter word `Rhetor` should come first.
C.The order is incorrect; `Rhetorical analysis` should be first because it is the longest phrase.
D.The order is correct because `Rhetoric` ends with a 'c' which comes before the 'i' in `Rhetorical analysis`.
Challenging
A list is sorted as: 1. `Chronicle`, 2. `Chronology`, 3. `Chronic`. Evaluate this order and identify the logical flaw by applying the sequential comparison method and the shorter word rule.
A.The list is correct as it is ordered by word length.
B.The flaw is that `Chronology` should be last, as 'l' comes after 'i'.
C.The flaw is that `Chronic`, as the shortest word starting with 'Chron', should be first.
D.The list is correct because 'Chronicle' is the most common term.
