Commas in a Series Item 1, Item 2, and Item 3 Use commas to separate three or more words, phrases, or clauses in a list. In academic writing, it is standard practice to use the Oxford comma (the comma before the 'and') to prevent misreading. Commas in Dates Month Day, Year, (rest of sentence) Use a comma to separate the day of the month from the year. If the date appears in the middle of a sentence, you must also place a comma after the year. Commas in Places City, State, (rest of sentence) Use a comma to separate a city from its state or country. If the place name appears in the middle of a sentence, you must also place a comma after the state or country.
