Always check for these three elements. If any one is missing, it's a fragment. The 'complete thought' part is crucial for distinguishing independent clauses from dependent clauses. Dependent Clause Rule A dependent (or subordinate) clause contains a subject and a verb but does NOT express a complete thought because it begins with a subordinating conjunction (e.g., because, although, while, since, when, if).
