Key Rules & Conventions

The Antecedent Must Be Present and Clear A pronoun's antecedent must be a specific noun or noun phrase that has been stated in the sentence or a preceding sentence. It cannot be implied or hidden. Before using a pronoun, make sure the noun it refers to has already been introduced clearly. If there are multiple nouns, ensure the pronoun's meaning points to only one. Proximity Matters (But Isn't Everything) While an antecedent is often close to its pronoun, don't assume the closest noun is always the correct one. You must consider the meaning of the entire sentence. Always read the full sentence and the surrounding sentences.
