Key Rules & Conventions

The 'What Does It Describe?' Rule Adverbs always describe a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. They *never* describe a noun. To identify an adverb, first find the word it seems to be describing. If that word is a verb (action), an adjective (describes a noun), or another adverb, then the describing word is likely an adverb. The 'How, When, Where, How Often' Rule Adverbs answer specific questions about the action or description: How? When? Where? How often? When you read a sentence, ask these questions about the main action or description. The word that answers one of these questions is an adverb.
