The Relationship First Rule
Before choosing a transition, always figure out the logical connection between the two sentences.
Read the two sentences you want to connect. Ask yourself: 'How are these ideas related?' Are they opposites (contrast)? Is one the reason for the other (cause/effect)? Is it just adding more information (addition)? Knowing the relationship is the key to picking the right word.
The Comma Rule
When a transition word starts a sentence, place a comma after it.
Many transition words and phrases that appear at the beginning of a sentence need to be followed by a comma. This creates a small pause for the reader and makes the sentence easier to understand. For example: 'Therefore, we had to go inside.' or 'On the other hand, we could...
