Key Rules & Conventions

The Article Test A word that comes after an article ('a', 'an', 'the') is very often a noun. When you see 'a', 'an', or 'the', look at the word that follows it. For example, in 'the big dog', 'dog' is the noun, not 'big'. The 'Who or What?' Test Find the action word (verb) in the sentence. Ask 'Who?' or 'What?' before it. The answer is usually a noun. In the sentence 'The birds sing loudly,' the action is 'sing'. Ask, 'WHO sing loudly?' The answer is 'The birds'. So, 'birds' is a noun.
