Key Rules & Conventions

Match the Part of Speech The synonym you choose must be the same part of speech as the word you are replacing. If you are replacing an adjective (a describing word), you must choose another adjective. You can't replace an adjective with a verb (an action word). Most thesaurus entries group synonyms by their part of speech. Check the Context Always read your sentence with the new synonym to make sure it makes sense and has the right feeling. Not all synonyms can be swapped perfectly. The word `thin` can mean 'skinny' or 'see-through.' You could say 'a thin person' but not 'a see-through person'.
