Key Rules & Conventions

The Singular Subject Rule Singular Subject + Singular Verb (often ends in -s) If the subject is just one person, place, or thing, the verb that goes with it usually ends in -s. Think 'Singular Subject, add an S'. The Plural Subject Rule Plural Subject + Plural Verb (no -s at the end) If the subject is more than one person, place, or thing, the verb that goes with it does not get an -s at the end. The 'And' Rule Subject 1 + and + Subject 2 = Plural Verb When you connect two or more subjects with the word 'and', you create a plural subject. This plural subject needs a plural verb.
