Key Rules & Conventions
The 'Who' Rule (Subject)
Use 'who' when you are talking about the subject of the clause (the person DOING the action).
If the person you are describing is the one performing the verb in the descriptive part of the sentence, you should use 'who'.
The 'Whom' Rule (Object)
Use 'whom' when you are talking about the object of the clause (the person RECEIVING the action).
If the person you are describing is having the action done to them in the descriptive part of the sentence, you should use 'whom'.
The He/Him Trick
If you can replace the word with 'he' or 'she', use 'who'. If you can replace it with 'him' or 'her', use 'whom'.
