Key Rules & Conventions

The Subject-Match Rule The reflexive pronoun must always match the subject of the sentence. If the subject is 'I', the reflexive pronoun must be 'myself'. If the subject is 'they', the reflexive pronoun must be 'themselves'. You can't mix and match them. The Action Bounces Back Rule Use a reflexive pronoun only when the subject of the sentence is also the object (the one receiving the action). Think of the action like a boomerang. It starts with the subject and comes right back to the subject. For example, in 'She congratulated herself,' the action of congratulating goes from 'she' back to 'herself'. The Singular vs. Plural Rule Use '-self' for one person/thing. Use '-selves'...
