Key Rules & Conventions

The Line-by-Line Order Line 1: Recipient's Full Name Line 2: Street Address Line 3: City, State ZIP Code Every address follows this three-line pattern. This order helps the post office machines and mail carriers read the address quickly and correctly. The Capitalization Convention Capitalize the first letter of the recipient's name, the street name, the city, and the state. Proper nouns, which are specific names of people, places, or things, are always capitalized. In an address, almost everything is a proper noun! The Comma Rule Place one comma between the name of the city and the name of the state. This comma is a very important piece of punctuation. It separates the two different location parts (city and state) on the same line to avoid confusion.
