Key Rules & Conventions

The End Mark Rule Every complete sentence must end with one punctuation mark: a period (.), a question mark (?), or an exclamation point (!). Use a period for a statement. Use a question mark for a question. Use an exclamation point to show strong emotion. The Comma in a Series Rule Use a comma to separate three or more words or phrases in a list. Place a comma after each item in the list except for the last one. For example: 'I saw lions, tigers, and bears.' The Dialogue Rule Place quotation marks (" ") around the exact words a person says. The punctuation that ends the spoken words (like a comma or question mark) goes inside the closing quotation mark. For example: "Where are you going?" she asked.
