Key Rules & Conventions
The Relationship Rule
First, find the relationship. Then, pick the transition.
Before you choose a transition word, you must figure out how the two sentences are connected. Are they in order (sequence)? Are they opposites (contrast)? Does one cause the other (cause and effect)?
The 'Try It Out' Rule
Read the sentence aloud with your chosen transition word.
Sometimes, the best way to check your work is to hear it. If the sentence sounds smooth and makes sense, you probably picked a good transition. If it sounds clunky or confusing, try another one.
The Comma Convention
A transition at the beginning of a sentence is often followed by a comma.
