The 'Person, Place, Thing, or Idea' Test Ask yourself: Does this word name a person, a place, a thing, or an idea? Use this question for any word in a sentence to check if it's a noun. If the answer is yes, you've found a noun! The 'A/An/The' Clue Nouns often come after the words 'a,' 'an,' or 'the.' These small words are clues that a noun is probably coming next.
