The 'A' Rule
Use 'a' before a word that starts with a consonant sound.
If the very next word after the article begins with a sound like 'b', 'c', 'd', 'f', etc., you should use the article 'a'.
The 'An' Rule
Use 'an' before a word that starts with a vowel sound.
If the very next word after the article begins with a sound like 'a', 'e', 'i', 'o', or 'u', you should use the article 'an'.
