The 'Was' Rule (for Singular Subjects) Singular Subject + was Use 'was' when the subject of the sentence is a single person, place, or thing. This includes the pronouns I, he, she, and it. The 'Were' Rule (for Plural Subjects) Plural Subject + were Use 'were' when the subject of the sentence is more than one person, place, or thing. This includes the pronouns we and they. The Special 'You' Rule You + were Always use 'were' with the pronoun 'you', even if you are only talking to one person. 'You was' is never correct.
