Key Rules & Conventions

The 'Drop the e' Rule If the base adjective ends in 'e', drop the 'e' before adding -er or -est. Use this for words like 'large' or 'brave'. You don't want to have a double 'e' like 'largeer', so you drop the first one. For example: large -> larg -> larger, largest. The 'Change y to i' Rule If the base adjective ends in a 'y', change the 'y' to an 'i' before adding -er or -est. Use this for words like 'happy' or 'silly'.
