Key Rules & Conventions

Rule 1: Find the Category Look at all the words in the group first. Ask yourself, 'What do MOST of these words have in common?' This shared idea is the main category or relationship. Rule 2: Check Each Word Test every word against the category you found. Go through the list one by one and ask, 'Does this word fit in my group?' The one that doesn't is the word that doesn't belong. Rule 3: Look for Different Word Jobs Think about the Part of Speech for each word. Sometimes, three words are nouns (things) and one is a verb (action), or three are adjectives (describing words) and one is a noun. The word with a different job is the one that doesn't belong.
