The Before-the-Noun Rule Adjectives often come right before the noun they are describing. Look for a describing word immediately in front of a person, place, or thing. For example, in 'the big dog', 'big' comes right before the noun 'dog'. The After-a-Linking-Verb Rule Adjectives can come after linking verbs like 'is', 'are', 'was', 'were', 'seems', or 'feels'. Sometimes, the describing word is separated from the noun. For example, in 'The dog is big', the adjective 'big' comes after the verb 'is' but still describes the 'dog'.
