Key Rules & Conventions

The Pattern Finder Rule Look at each word in the model sentence and label its part of speech (Noun, Verb, Adjective, etc.). Use this first step to figure out the sentence 'recipe'. This helps you see the structure you need to copy. The Word Swap Rule Replace each key word from the model with a new word of the exact same type. You must swap a noun for a noun, a verb for a verb, and an adjective for an adjective. This keeps the sentence pattern the same. The Sense Check Rule Read your new sentence out loud to make sure it makes sense. After you swap the words, your new sentence must still be a complete thought that is easy to understand.
