Learning Objectives
Analyze the precise logical and semantic relationship between words in a given analogical pair.
Categorize complex analogical relationships, such as cause-to-effect, degree of intensity, or function-to-object.
Evaluate the validity and rhetorical effectiveness of analogies used in British and World literature and persuasive essays.
Construct original, sophisticated analogies that demonstrate a nuanced understanding of abstract concepts.
Deconstruct flawed or misleading analogies in arguments to identify logical fallacies.
Apply analogical reasoning to solve complex problems on standardized tests like the SAT and ACT.

Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
AnalogyA comparison between two things, typically for the purpose of explanation or clarification, based on a shared logical relationship or structure.An atom is like a solar system. (Nucleus:Sun :: Electrons:Planets)
Analogical ReasoningThe cognitive process of transferring information or meaning from a particular subject (the source) to another particular subject (the target).If a doctor uses knowledge of human anatomy to understand the anatomy of a primate, they are using analogical reasoning.
Semantic RelationshipThe underlying connection between the meanings of words in an analogy. This is the core logic you must identify.In 'HOT : SCALDING', the semantic relationship is one of degree or intensity.
Source PairThe first pair of words in a standard analo...

Key Rules & Conventions
The Relationship Consistency Rule
A is to B as C is to D (A:B :: C:D)
The primary rule of all analogies. The semantic relationship between words A and B must be identical in nature and direction to the relationship between words C and D. You must first articulate this relationship in a precise sentence.
The Part-of-Speech Parallelism Rule
Noun:Noun :: Noun:Noun or Verb:Adjective :: Verb:Adjective
While not absolute, the grammatical form of the words in the source pair often mirrors the form in the target pair. If A is a noun and B is a verb describing what A does, then C should be a noun and D should be a verb describing what C does. This helps eliminate incorrect answer choices.
The Specificity and Nuance Rule
Match the relationship's exact shade of meaning.

A political commentator argues: 'Expecting a new president to fix a deep-seated economic recession in their first year is like expecting a gardener to grow a prize-winning rose from seed in a single day. Both require time and patience.' A critic of this argument would most effectively identify a Logical Fallacy of Faulty Analogy by pointing out that:
A.The rate of economic change, influenced by policy and global markets, is not bound by the same immutable biological laws as plant growth.
B.Growing roses is a hobby, whereas managing an economy is a professional job.
C.The president has a team of advisors, but the gardener works alone.
D.Some roses can, in fact, grow very quickly under ideal conditions.
