Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
Thesis StatementThe central, debatable claim that an essay or research paper aims to prove. It is the engine of the entire argument, governing the paper's focus, structure, and evidence. In *Heart of Darkness*, Joseph Conrad uses the contrasting settings of London and the Congo not just to condemn colonialism, but to critique the very notion of 'civilization' as a fragile, hypocritical construct.
Arguable ClaimA statement that is not a fact but a debatable interpretation or position that requires evidence and analysis for support. It invites disagreement and discussion.Arguable: 'Shakespeare's *Hamlet* is primarily a play about political espionage, not just personal revenge.' vs. Fact: 'Shakespeare wrote *Hamlet* in the early 17th ce...

Key Rules & Conventions
The 'So What?' Test
A strong thesis must answer the question, 'So what?' or 'Why is this important?'
When you think you've found a thesis, ask if it presents a significant, insightful argument. If it's a simple fact or an obvious observation (e.g., 'Hamlet is a prince of Denmark'), it fails the test and is not the thesis. The thesis must offer a unique interpretation that needs proving.
