Key Rules & Conventions
Rule for One-Syllable Adverbs
Base Adverb + '-er' (Comparative) / Base Adverb + '-est' (Superlative)
For most adverbs that do not end in -ly and have only one syllable (e.g., fast, hard, late, soon), add -er to compare two actions and -est to compare three or more.
Rule for Adverbs Ending in -ly
'more' + Base Adverb (Comparative) / 'most' + Base Adverb (Superlative)
For the vast majority of adverbs, especially those formed by adding -ly to an adjective (e.g., quickly, carefully, profoundly), use the word 'more' for the comparative form and 'most' for the superlative form. Do not add -er or -est.
