Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Differentiate between restrictive and nonrestrictive elements with 95% accuracy. Correctly punctuate sentences containing nonrestrictive clauses, phrases, and appositives. Analyze passages from British and World literature to identify the function and stylistic effect of nonrestrictive elements. Revise their own college-level writing to eliminate comma errors related to nonrestrictive elements. Evaluate the stylistic impact of using nonrestrictive elements to add detail and nuance in complex sentences. Articulate the grammatical rationale for using commas to set off non-essential information in peer-review discussions. Ever wonder if that extra bit of information in a sentence *needs* commas around it? 🤔 Let's explore when a 'by the way' d...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample Restrictive Element (Essential)A clause, phrase, or word that is essential to the meaning of the sentence because it limits or identifies the noun it modifies. Removing it would fundamentally change or obscure the sentence's meaning. It is NOT set off by commas. The student who aced the final exam will be exempt from the project. (The clause specifies *which* student.) Nonrestrictive Element (Non-essential)A clause, phrase, or word that adds extra, non-essential information to a sentence. The core meaning of the sentence would remain intact if this element were removed. It IS set off by commas. The top student, who aced the final exam, will be exempt from the project. (We already know who the top student is; the clause adds extra detail.) AppositiveA noun or noun...

Key Rules & Conventions

The Fundamental Comma Rule Use commas to set off nonrestrictive (non-essential) elements. Do not use commas for restrictive (essential) elements. This is the primary test. If a phrase or clause can be removed without changing the sentence's core meaning or creating ambiguity, it is nonrestrictive and requires commas. If removing it makes the sentence unclear, it is restrictive and does not get commas. The 'That' vs. 'Which' Convention In formal writing, use 'that' for restrictive clauses (no comma) and 'which' for nonrestrictive clauses (with a comma). This convention helps clarify intent. 'The theory that he proposed is controversial' points to a specific theory. 'His latest theory, which he proposed yesterday, is...

Challenging
Consider the philosophical statement: 'Humans, who are inherently flawed, strive for perfection.' What is the most significant implication of punctuating the clause 'who are inherently flawed' as nonrestrictive?
A.It implies that only some humans are inherently flawed.
B.It presents the idea that all humans are inherently flawed as a fundamental, accepted premise of the statement.
C.It suggests that the inherent flaws are the direct cause of the striving for perfection.
D.It makes the sentence a comma splice, which is grammatically incorrect.
Challenging
An author writes: 'London, a city that has survived plagues and fires, is a symbol of resilience.' Why might the author choose to structure the information with a nonrestrictive appositive rather than two separate sentences (e.g., 'London is a symbol of resilience. It is a city that has survived plagues and fires.')?
A.To meet a required word count for the publication.
B.To create a more fluid and sophisticated sentence structure, embedding the cause (surviving plagues and fires) directly within the description of the effect (being a symbol of resilience).
C.To obscure the main point of the sentence by hiding it behind a complex clause.
D.To follow a grammatical rule that all sentences about proper nouns must contain a nonrestrictive element.
