TermDefinitionExample
AnalogyA comparison between two things, typically for the purpose of explanation or clarification, that shows a relationship of correspondence. In word pattern analogies, this is expressed as A : B :: C : D ('A is to B as C is to D').UP : DOWN :: HOT : COLD. The relationship is 'antonym' or 'opposite'.
Source PairThe first pair of words (A : B) in an analogy that establishes the specific relationship you must identify and match.In the analogy GILLS : FISH :: LUNGS : WHALE, the source pair is GILLS : FISH.
Target PairThe second pair of words (C : D) in an analogy, which must have the same relationship as the source pair.In the analogy GILLS : FISH :: LUNGS : WHALE, the target pair is LUNGS : WHALE.
Bridge SentenceA clear sentence that con...

Key Rules & Conventions
The Bridge Sentence Rule
A is to B as C is to D (A:B::C:D)
Always formulate a precise sentence that defines the relationship between the first two words (A and B). Then, apply that exact same sentence structure to the potential answer choices to see which one (C and D) fits perfectly.
The Part-of-Speech Parallelism Rule
Noun : Verb :: Noun : Verb
The parts of speech in the source pair should match the parts of speech in the target pair. If the source is a noun and a verb, the correct target pair will also be a noun and a verb in the same order.
The Specificity and Order Rule
Relationship(A, B) must equal Relationship(C, D) in both type and direction.
The relationship must be identical and in the same order. For example, 'SPOKE : WHEEL' is a 'part to wh...
