The Prime Directive: Preserve Original Meaning The omission of words must not alter the fundamental meaning, tone, or context of the original quotation. This is the most important rule. Before using an ellipsis, ask yourself: 'Does the shortened quote still fairly represent what the author was trying to say?' Never omit words like 'not,' 'except,' or 'rarely' if they are essential to the original meaning.
