Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
ElementA general term for any word, phrase, or clause that functions as a single unit within a sentence. In 'The green light, a symbol of hope, burned at the end of the dock,' both 'a symbol of hope' (a phrase) and 'green' (a word) are elements.
Restrictive Element (Essential)An element that is essential to the meaning of the sentence because it limits or identifies the noun it modifies. It cannot be removed without changing the sentence's fundamental meaning. It is NOT set off by commas. The character who represents the American Dream is Jay Gatsby. Use a pair of commas to set off a nonrestrictive element. If the element is at the end of the sentence, use one comma before it.
Commas act like handles, allowing you to 'lift' the nonessential information out of the sentence. If you can't lift it out without breaking the sentence's meaning, you don't need commas.

In the sentence 'The promise of the West, which beckoned to so many with dreams of a new life, often proved to be a mirage built on hardship,' why is the 'which' clause grammatically nonrestrictive?
A.Because it begins with 'which', and 'which' clauses are always nonrestrictive.
B.The sentence would become a fragment if the clause were removed.
C.The clause is essential to understanding which specific 'promise' is being discussed.
D.The core meaning is that a specific, already identified 'promise of the West' was a mirage; the clause merely describes this singular promise.
