Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Identify the five main parts inside a computer: CPU, RAM, Hard Drive, Motherboard, and Power Supply. Describe the job of the CPU using the analogy of a 'brain'. Explain the difference between RAM (short-term memory) and a Hard Drive (long-term storage). Point to the motherboard and describe its role as the main circuit board that connects everything. Recognize that the Power Supply gives electricity to all the other parts. Use a simple 'IF...THEN' conditional statement to describe a hardware event, like 'IF I plug in my headphones, THEN I can hear the sound.' Have you ever wondered what makes a computer, tablet, or video game console work? It's like a secret city of tiny parts inside a box! 🏙️ Today, we're going on...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample CPU (Central Processing Unit)The 'brain' of the computer. It does all the thinking, makes all the decisions, and tells the other parts what to do.When you click to open a game, the CPU is the part that thinks, 'Okay, I need to start the game now!' RAM (Random Access Memory)The computer's 'short-term memory' or 'workspace'. It holds onto whatever you are working on right now, but forgets when the power turns off.If you are drawing a picture, RAM remembers all your colors and brush strokes. If you close the program without saving, RAM forgets the drawing. Hard Drive (or SSD)The computer's 'long-term memory' or 'closet'. It stores all your files, games, and pictures forever, even when the computer is...

Core Syntax & Patterns

The 'Brain' Rule Look for the square chip, often hidden under a big fan. Use this rule to find the CPU. The CPU works very hard and gets hot, so it almost always needs a fan to cool it down. If you find the fan, you've found the brain's hiding spot! The 'Memory' Rule IF it's a long, thin stick, THEN it's RAM. IF it's a bigger, chunky box, THEN it's the Hard Drive. Use this conditional rule to tell the two types of memory apart. RAM sticks are for 'right now' memory, and the Hard Drive box is for 'forever' storage. The 'Connection' Rule Find the biggest board that everything else plugs into. This rule helps you find the Motherboard. It's the foundation of the computer city. All the &#...

Sample Practice Questions

Challenging
Your scavenger hunt clue says: 'I am not the brain, but I help the brain see. I have my own special memory and often my own fan. I make games look beautiful.' What part is this?
A.The motherboard
B.The Graphics Card (GPU)
C.The Power Supply Unit
D.The Hard Drive
Challenging
A computer stores the letter 'C' as a pattern of 8 bits (like 01000011). If you type the word 'CAT' (3 letters) and save it, where does the pattern of 24 bits get stored so you can open the file tomorrow?
A.In the Hard Drive
B.In the RAM
C.In the CPU
D.In the Power Supply
Challenging
You are building a computer from a scavenger hunt list. You have the brain (CPU), the short-term memory (RAM), and the long-term storage (Hard Drive). What single, essential part do you need to physically connect all of these together?
A.bigger computer case
B.graphics card
C.motherboard
D.power supply
