Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Define 'digital footprint' using the concept of data. Identify at least three online actions (events) that create a digital footprint. Explain that a digital footprint can be permanent. Trace a simple sequence of online events to map a character's data trail. Use a simple 'IF-THEN' conditional statement to describe the consequence of sharing information online. Differentiate between information that is okay to share and private information. Have you ever left footprints in the sand or snow? 🐾 What if every click you made online left a footprint that everyone could see? Today, we're going to be Digital Footprint Detectives! We will learn how our online actions, like playing games or watching videos, create a trail of informa...

Core Syntax & Patterns

The 'IF-THEN' Sharing Rule (Conditional) IF an action is done online, THEN it creates data for your footprint. Use this rule to think before you act. Before you click or type, ask yourself: IF I do this, what data will I create, and is it safe to share? The Data Trail Pattern Event 1 -> Data 1; Event 2 -> Data 2; Event 3 -> Data 3... This pattern shows that every online event adds a new piece of data to your trail. Your footprint gets bigger with every action you take.

Sample Practice Questions

Challenging
You are creating a class project online with a partner. You write a comment, 'Maybe we should change the color.' Your partner sees it and you both agree to delete the comment. What is the most accurate description of that comment's digital footprint?
A.The footprint was completely erased forever because you both agreed
B.The comment is now printed and mailed to your teacher
C.Only your partner has a copy of the comment's data
D.Even though it's deleted, a record of the comment might still exist on the website's computer (server)
Challenging
An app offers you a free, special item for your game IF you give it permission to see all the contacts in your address book. Why is this a tricky digital footprint choice?
A.Because the special item might not be very good
B.Because your contacts will get the same free item
C.Because you are trading your friends' private data (their names and numbers) for a prize, without their permission
D.Because the app might use the contacts to call your parents
Challenging
Your friend posts a photo of you at a party, but you don't like the photo. You are not tagged in it. Is this photo part of your digital footprint?
A.Yes, because it is data about you that exists online, even if your name isn't attached
B.No, because if you are not tagged, the computer doesn't know it's you
C.No, because only things you post yourself are part of your footprint
D.Yes, but only if you are smiling in the photo
