Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Identify a simple repeating pattern. Describe a pattern using words like 'first' and 'next'. Continue a given pattern with the next correct item. Create their own simple pattern using two or three items. Find patterns in everyday objects like clothes or songs. Explain that a pattern is something that repeats. Look at a ladybug's spots! 🐞 Do you see a pattern? Let's be pattern detectives! We will learn how to find patterns all around us. Finding patterns helps us guess what comes next! Real-World Applications Stripes on your shirt 👕 Songs that repeat words đŸŽļ Blocks stacked in a tower 🧱 Days of the week 📅

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample PatternA pattern is something that repeats over and over again.Example: 🍎🍌🍎🍌🍎🍌... This is a pattern! RepeatTo do or see the same thing again and again.Example: The dog says 'woof, woof, woof'. đŸļ It repeats! RuleThe special instruction that tells you how to make the pattern.Example: The rule is: first a cat 🐈, then a mouse 🐁. CoreThe smallest part of the pattern that repeats.Example: In '☀ī¸đŸŒ™â˜€ī¸đŸŒ™', the core is '☀ī¸đŸŒ™'. SequenceA list of things that are in a special order.Example: 1, 2, 3, 4 is a sequence of numbers. PredictTo make a smart guess about what will come next.Example: In '🚗🚌🚗...', you can predict a 🚌 is next.

Core Syntax & Patterns

Find the Core Look for the smallest group of items that repeats. Finding the core helps you understand the whole pattern. Say the Rule Use words like 'First..., then...' to describe the core. This helps you tell a friend how to make the same pattern. Check and Continue Check if the pattern keeps repeating. Then add the next part. This is how you make a pattern longer or fix a mistake.
